Roanoke Island Aquarium

The Graveyard of the Atlantic. Experience this evocative description in a 285,000 gallon tank at the Roanoke Island Aquarium in Manteo, NC. You can watch some pretty intimidating sharks cruise by in a tank that will stun and delight you. Although not as large as the aquarium in Virginia Beach, it is much more affordable ($8 tickets vs $21 at VB). And, as they say, size is not everything, as the layout and flow of the NC Aquarium is (in my opinion) superior. You can enjoy some beautifully designed habitat tanks, as well as a touch pool for the kiddies that will all but guarantee a close encounter with an alien skate. Walk the grounds of the Aquarium and enjoy its serene setting in the center of Croatan Sound. There is the obligatory restaurant and gift shop, but they don't force you to walk the gauntlet like many other places. The Elizbethan Gardens are also nearby, and there are some topnotch pubs and restaurants in the nearby town of Manteo.

Thank you for recommending this place. I didn't know there was an aquarium of this caliber relatively near to us. I always seem to forget that there is a whole different state right next to me here in Chesapeake! I find the VB Aquarium to be much more expensive, and I'm not convinced it's worth the extra money. Besides, Manteo is a very interesting town, which makes this daytrip more of an adventure.
