Dismal Swamp Canal Trail

Description:

If you asked me to name four dreary, off-putting words in the English language, I would give you Dismal and Swamp and Canal and Trail, in that order. So my expectations were pretty darn low when I decided to finally visit this spot in late spring this year. And while it wasn't exactly Busch Gardens, nor was it dismal, swampy, dreary, or off-putting. In fact, it is just an 8.3 mile road ("trail" is inaccurate) that runs alongside a canal. The first time I visited, I was training for an upcoming 10k, so I thought this would be a good place to get some running in. It was, but frankly, it is a straight 8.3 miles of the same scenery, so it can get boring pretty quickly. The next time I visited, I brought my young kids along to teach them how to ride a bike, and this is where the true merit of the canal trail shines. There is plenty of road and no cars (unlike my neighborhood), so I wasn't constantly plagued with an anxiety attack about getting hit. For a quick bike ride, it's great.
