Dismal Swamp State Park Visitor Center NC

Description:

If you've got little ones, the Dismal Swamp State Park Visitor Center off of Hwy 17 in North Carolina is an easy visit for nature, education, and outdoor exercise. From the highway, the Visitor Center can deceptively look like just another highway rest stop. But take the time to stop. There is an absolutely first class visitor center with great exhibits on the fauna, flora, and human history of the swamp. You have to cross a drawbridge over the intracoastal waterway to get to the visitor center. Bring your bikes, kayak, or hiking shoes, too, as there are over 18 miles of trails in the park, including both paved and unpaved trails. We love coming here with the little ones, because you're not paranoid about cars running them over on the trails. I think the paved trails here are a little more interesting than the Canal Trail in Chesapeake, because it bends in and out of the trees instead of just being a long, boring straight-away. Bring your camera for the wildlife.

Nice, soft trails here if you are into running. It's easy on the knees and you have to sign in with the rangers, so at least someone can keep track of you if you go missing.
